Progress SEO's top 10 Google ranking myths are listed below to help everyone understand how simple Google really is. We get a bit tired of hearing 'self proclaimed' Google experts trying to create an air of mystery around Google, Page Rank and other elements of getting your company listed in Google.
Getting listed in Google can be a chore, it can be time consuming and it can be very difficult in some situations but there are ways and means for any company to get listed. At Progress SEO we are happy to tell you many of these facts for free just so you can avoid being ripped off by the so called experts.

- 1: You CAN rank as Position 1, Page 1 with no page rank at all. TRUE
So does Google Page Rank Matter? Well it sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Does Google Page Rank matter? - 2: You CAN be listed on Google in under 2 weeks from the creation of your site. TRUE
- 3: You CAN rank as Position 1, Page 1 with no back links to your site at all. TRUE
- 4: Keyword density in a page is insignificant in 99% of cases. TRUE
- 5: Domain Age is insignificant in 99% of cases. TRUE
- 6: Google doesn't use Meta Tags to list your site? FALSE. Sorry, but if they are present and appropriate then yes it does take them in to account.
- 7: Google can reduce your Page Rank if you buy links to your site? FALSE. However if YOUR site links to link farms or other Page Rank manipulating sites which Google is aware of, then your Page Rank may be penalized.
- 8: All links back to your site will increase your Page rank? FALSE. One example is that many Blogs, Forums, Social Sites and sites such as Wikipedia are now using 'rel=nofollow' on their links which tells Google , do not include this link for Page Rank
- 9: Google SEO's can magically trick Google in to ranking your site highly? FALSE. A good SEO partner will constantly monitor and evolve their strategy for ranking any sites. They then apply these techniques to your company. SEO's spend a long time getting their strategy right and KEEPING it right, and it can be very time consuming applying this to your site. That's why good SEO's are worth paying for.
- 10: Getting ranked on Google is a battle and we are all trying to beat Google? FALSE. You shouldn't see it as trying to beat Google. 'IF' you wish to be listed in 'THEIR' search engine then you do need to adhere to their rules, unfortunately some of their rules aren't very clear. Good luck.

NB: In January 2008 we found strong evidence that back links are becoming generally less important. It appears Google's PageRank system is changing once again, it's importance in the overall Google ranking algorithm is being decreased. Our conclusion is that this is in response to the increasingly more sophisticated techniques used by Black Hat SEOs in manipulating back links. If Google can't stop the Page Rank abuse then they are forced to change the 'weight' of its importance.
