SEO Backlinks

Backlinks (sometimes written back-links) are links from any web site that link to a page in your web site. 

Backlinks are an important part of acquiring Google Page Rank for any of your pages.  Google views any link from an external site to your site as a ‘vote’ that your site is of some importance or at least of some interest (for what ever reason, good or bad) to the publisher of the external site.

Google calculates how important this ‘vote’ is for any page by a relationship between the Google Page Rank of the page that is voting and the number of votes that page casts.  Hence not all backlinks to your site are equal, the higher the Google Page Rank of the page with the backlink in the better.  The fewer the number of backlinks in a page the better.  There is a complex and non-linear relationship between these 2 aspects, understanding this relationship can seriously affect the benefit gained from a campaign to create backlinks.  Professional SEO companies maximise the gain of any backlink strategy by having a great understanding of how Google (and other search engines) quantify the value of any backlink.

Creating links that are too uniform, too similar and basically not very natural looking can undermine backlink strategies.  If you attempt to create too many backlinks with the same text at the same time this can sometimes trigger suspicion in the Google algorithm and hence have no positive affect to your Google Page Rank.

Backlinks are important but they are not the be all and end all of getting ranked well in search engines. Many SEO strategies over play the importance of backlinks and make their work much harder than it should be. This can result in passing on high costs to their clients.
